Where to Stay in Athens

Athens’ visitor core sits in a compact ring around the Acropolis: Plaka, Monastiraki, Syntagma and Koukaki flow into one another on foot, while Kolonaki climbs just northeast and the Riviera suburbs stretch south to the coast. The airport is well connected by Metro Line 3 and the X95 express bus to the centre, so most first-time visitors should anchor in that central ring. Choose by your main interest: ancient sights and neighbourhood charm, transport and shopping, nightlife and markets, local food streets, or beach time.

First-time visitors Sightseeing Food

The oldest neighbourhood, wrapping around the north and east slopes of the Acropolis with narrow pedestrian lanes, neoclassical houses and tavernas. Ideal for first-time visitors who want to walk to the Acropolis, Ancient Agora and Monastiraki, though it can be busy and hilly in parts.

  • Unbeatable location for the Acropolis and historic core
  • Pedestrian lanes with tavernas and cafes
  • Taxis can drop at the edge but the area is largely car-free
  • Crowded in high season and on weekends
  • Some lanes are steep and stepped, so not ideal for heavy luggage
